Jones leaving United Way effective Sept. 30

WILKES-BARRE — The United Way of Wyoming Valley on Tuesday announced that, after 12 years as its President and CEO, Bill Jones has made the decision to step down and resign his employment effective Sept. 30.

Under Jones’ leadership, the organization increased its focus on reducing childhood poverty throughout the community and has become one of the Wyoming Valley’s most visible advocates for children and families in need.

In addition to strengthening the organization’s partnerships with all of the Wyoming Valley’s public-school districts, Jones’ many accomplishments include the development of more than a dozen special initiatives including: The Dolly Parton Imagination Library; the Nurse’s Pantry program; the See to Succeed Vision Clinic; and the recently launched Parent Support Line.

In 2023, more than 17,000 children benefited from the organization’s funding and programs.

In 2018, Jones also led the successful integration of the Berwick Area United Way into the United Way of Wyoming Valley.

His tenure as the leader of the organization is the third longest in its history.

“I am incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together over the past 12 years,” said Jones. “I am grateful to every donor, volunteer, partner agency and our dedicated staff who all believe in this mission, and care so much about at-risk children and families in the Wyoming Valley. It has been the honor of a lifetime to work with our staff to serve the United Way of Wyoming Valley and the community. While there is still much work to do, it is time for a new leader, and I’m excited about the organization’s future.”

Tara Mugford Wilson, chair of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Wyoming Valley, said “We are grateful to Bill for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to our community,” said “Our focus on reducing childhood poverty under Bill’s leadership has ensured that we are addressing the most critical needs of our community. We will miss Bill and are excited to see what he does next. Thanks to Bill and the rest of our team, we are well positioned to continue our critical mission of assisting children and families in need for years to come.”

The board of directors will begin the search for a new president and CEO in the coming weeks.

Jones intends to continue to serve the Northeast Pennsylvania community and is excited about the opportunities in front of him. He will make an announcement regarding his plans in the near future.
