Melky Mesa hit the game-winning, two-run single when the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past the Pawtucket Red Sox and protect their International League North Division lead with a 5-4 victory.

Pawtucket took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth and appeared ready to force a tie for the division lead.

The Yankees started their comeback with a run in the sixth inning. Brandon Laird doubled and scored on an Austin Romine single.

Chase Whitley, who won his ninth game, and Ryota Igarashi, who picked up his eighth save, each worked two scoreless innings in relief.

The five-game series concludes tonight in Pawtucket.
