What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than to cleanse and awaken through a special yoga celebration? Barbara Tierney, Kundalini yoga instructor, will do just that at the Dietrich Theater March 24 at 10 a.m. All levels of experience will benefit and all are welcome.

The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning ‚??equal night.‚?Ě The spring and fall equinoxes are the only dates with equal daylight and dark as the sun crosses the celestial equator. At the equinoxes, the tilt of Earth relative to the sun is zero, which means that Earth‚??s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun. (However, the tilt of Earth relative to its plane of orbit, called the ecliptic plane, is always about 23.5 degrees.)

Yogi Bhajan, Kundalini yoga guru, always spoke of the importance of spending the equinox and solstice times in deep meditation. This is how people throughout history celebrated these sacred moments. The equinox, the moment when the sun is directly above the equator moving from one hemisphere into the other, creates a shift in energy.

The spring equinox, when light and darkness are equal, is the time to get things moving again and clear out our systems ready for a summer of activity. It is the perfect time to focus on cleansing and rejuvenation to rid the body and mind of toxins. Toxins accelerate the aging process and create the perfect environment for disease. A Kundalini yoga practice can help us assist the body in cleansing itself, which will help us feel lighter, healthier, and more energetic again.
